Science Fair

What: The science fair will be an opportunity for students in grades 3-5 to undertake a science project of their own choosing, conduct scientific research and share their new knowledge with classmates and the full school community. The fair will be announced and advertised during school hours, although students will be expected to complete their projects independently (i.e., no class time will be devoted to these projects). We will hold several informational group meetings as well as one-on-one consultations to assist students in designing and completing their projects. All entries will be judged by an outside panel of volunteer scientists from the local community who will assess the project’s originality, rigor, presentation, and student understanding of his/her project.   Depending on the level of participation, awards will be given for each grade level or project category.

The school community will be invited to attend a science fair evening at the school. During this time, guests may speak with the young scientists, review the science projects, participate in a children’s science show, and enjoy a dessert reception.  In addition, hand-on science activity booths staffed by volunteers will be available to demonstrate interesting scientific principles.  A brief awards ceremony will conclude the evening’s events.

Needed: Volunteers throughout the year until the event.  Assistance on the day of the event.

When: Event tentatively scheduled for March 12, 2010.
