Conservation Landscaping

This year, the Conservation Landscaping Committee will continue activities centered on our new Forest Knolls Nature Trail. Our work is all about connecting our community with nature –doing what we can to protect and restore our school grounds, and use our grounds to promote outdoor learning.

Here are some of the activities we will undertake:

* Hold monthly conservation landscaping activities open to the school community (wildflower planting, weeding, etc.). Generally held on the “second Saturday” of each month from 9 am – Noon.

* Conduct major planting in November, with plants and materials funded by our major project donor, which has supplied approx. $4K in plants and materials to “Kids Reforesting Forest Knolls.” We will be planting several new trees and shrubs along the nature trail and kindergarten corridor.

* Start / expand a “monarch waystation” along the nature trail, with involvement from kindergarten teachers and students.

* Launch a seasonal “guide to the trail” which will encourage teachers and students to visit and learn about nature. The first edition will be produced in October and provided via email to teachers and in hard copy in a box at the trail’s entrance.

* Replace the nature trail signs, possibly with new content written by students, in the spring.

With more volunteers, we can do more to beautify our school and provide opportunities for outdoor learning!
